Gered Mankowitz was born in London in 1946.
He was the first son of author and screenwriter
Wolf Mankowitz and psychotherapist Ann Mankowitz.
Gered set up his first studio in Mason's Yard in 1963,
in the heart of London in the swinging 60s.
In 1964 he met and photographed Marianne Faithfull,
who was managed by the temperamental Andrew Loog Oldham,
who was also manager of the Rolling Stones.
Gered began working with the Stones in 1965;
he toured America with them and produced
several of their album covers. In early 1967,
he worked with The Jimi Hendrix Experience,
producing images of Jimi during two sessions
at his studio in Mason's Yard that would later
become some of the great musician's most
recognisable and iconic portraits.
Gered has continued to work in the music industry
for over 50 years. He currently focuses on exhibitions
and publishing books about his work, as well as
collaborating with selected galleries around the world.
In 2016 Gered was awarded Fellowship by the
Royal Photographic Society and he has lectured
at University College Falmouth and is based in Cornwall.
